Noriuki Haga has taken the second world superbike race win at Monza this afternoon by one one-hundredth of a second from race one winner Max Neukirchner who was, in turn, four one-hundredths in front of reigning British Superbike champion Ryuichi Kiyonari.
Championship leader Troy Bayliss was forced to retire on lap 11. Haga had gone past the Xerox Ducati and gesticulated to the Aussie who then looked down and slowed, returning to the pits on the next lap.
And Haga gave the spectators heart failure as his rear hugger was touching the Yamaha's Pirelli, causing the bike to smoke right through the Parabolica turn, giving the impression the engine had blown.
Kiyonari had taken the lead from Haga with three corners to go but Haga kept pressing into the Parabolica, Kiyo ran wide which allowed Haga to turn tight and go underneath his fellow countryman. Neukirchner was very early on the power, of which there is plenty, and just scraped past the Ten Kate Honda over the line.
Yukio Kagayama made a trip onto the grass and then highsided off his Alstare Suzuki halfway through the race and Max Biaggi was nerfed off by Jackob Smrz through the second chicane with three laps to go.
