A tyre gamble during the first part of Superpole at Monza today went bad for Stiggy Honda's Leon Haslam as a small mistake during his first outing left him without time to come in and change for a qualifier.
Haslam set sixth fastest time in the final free practice session going into Superpole, dropping his lap to a 1'45.763 using an almost bin-worthy Pirelli race tyre. However, going out on a spft race tyre in Superpole one proved to be his undoing.
"I am obviously disappointed. I messed up on my first lap and then I didn't have time to come in for another tyre, and the tyre I was running on was finished. I was 0.6s quicker in the session before on an old race tyre, so I felt confident I could run a good lap again," said Haslam.
"I am really disappointed, but that's the way this new Superpole qualifying works. We'll have to make a good start in the race tomorrow and try to make up for the ground lost."
