Monza WSBK: Coghlan bags provisional Supersport pole

Kawasaki DMC-Lorenzini’s Kev Coghlan was determined to finish the World Supersport qualifying practice session on top of the time-sheets, after he battled against the torrential rain to clock a time of 1’59.339.

The Scot completed more laps than any other rider out on the Italian circuit, but he had to contend with Team Goeleven rider Andrea Antonelli and MAHI Racing Team India’s Kenan Sofuoglu who were trying their hardest to set the fastest times. With less than five minutes remaining the Italian and Turkish rider's cruelly overtook the Perthshire lad, but Coghlan stormed past the two riders on his final lap and ended up on provisional pole. But Antonelli was not far off Coghlan’s pace and ended the session on 1’59.635, closely followed by regaining Supersport champion Sofuoglu who set a 1’59.728 lap.

The top three were the only riders to break through the two minute barrier, and PTR Honda’s Sheridan Morais and Pata Honda’s Lorenzo Zanetti’s could not find that extra pace to run in the 1’59’s and had to settle for fourth and fifth place respectively.

Rivamoto’s Jack Kennedy did catapult his way to fourth on the time-sheets, but at the end of the 45 minutes managed to cling on to a place inside the top ten, with a time of 2’01.542. It was a consistent session for ParkinGo MV Agusta Corse’s Christian Iddon. During the final five minutes of the qualifying practice the Brit stormed from nineteenth to ninth, but he was eventually pushed down to twelfth, after last minute charges from Suriano Racing Matthew Scholtz and Pata Honda’s Michael Van der Mark, proved too strong for the Stockport rider to contend with.

Yakhnich Motorsport’s Sam Lowes did not have the best time out on the wet and slippery Monza circuit, after he crashed half way through his third lap, but the rider was unhurt. Things started off well for the Lincolnshire lad as he set the fastest time after his first, and subsequently second laps, but after his crash he did not venture back out on track and had to watch the rest of the pack go quicker than his 2’02.178 time.

But even though Lowes completed only three laps he was still faster than Russian team-mate Vladimir Leonov, who completed eleven laps of the qualifying practice session but finished fourteenth overall, just behind Lowes.
