World Superbike rookie Ben Spies has taken the second race win at Phillip Island with Stiggy Honda's Leon Haslam stepping onto the podium in third behind Noriyuki Haga.
After his first race grass-tracking session in a collision with Aprilia's Max Biaggi, Spies was always in contention in the second outing swapping places with Haga and finally taking the lead with four laps to go.
The American rode around the outside of Biaggi at the Southern Loop on lap one to take the lead with Haslam chasing in fourth place. Haga came from the middle of the pack again to claim third on lap three.
The Japanese then went past Biaggi a lap later and began to chase down the leading Yamaha rider. Ten Kate Honda's Jonathan Rea, who was in the leading pack, then began to scythe his way backwards.
With 18 laps, with Spies and Haga trying to run away, Haslam began to make some inroads into the leading pair with Michel Fabrizio and Regis Laconi giving chase.
One lap later. Haga got past the Texan into Doohan Corner and put half a second into the Yamaha rider while Fabrizio began to hold up Haslam. The former BSB rider tried more than once to get past the second Xerox Ducati as Regis Laconi was beginning to catch the pair.
Spies re-took the lead with 12 laps to go but Haga went straight back past two laps later at MG and the Samurai of Slide then dropped the hammer to try and get away.
With six to go, Fabrizio squeezed past Biaggi at MG while Spies lined up Haga for a move into Doohan which he made real one lap later. Haslam put a move on Biaggi and then tried the same again on Fabrizio at MG, but ran wide. He eventually got past the Italian and romped home in third.
Jonathan Rea ended up ninth after his Ten Kate team tried some alterations that they shouldn't have and he was followed home by Tom Sykes in tenth and Tommy Hill in 14th.
Shane Byrne crashed out again, losing the rear of his Sterilgarda Ducati at Honda with 11 laps to go. Biaggi went off track on the final lap and ended the race in 15th.
