Phillip Island WSS: Sofuoglu takes victory; Lowes fifth

Two-time World Supersport Champion Kenan Sofuoglu made a triumphant return to the series at Phillip Island today, taking the first win of the season in a shortened race after a battle with another champion in the shape of Fabien Foret.

The Kawasaki man held station for the first half of the race and then made his way to the front, going from fifth to first in the space of two laps and then fending off fellow Kawasaki runner Foret to cross the line by less than a tenth of a second.

The PTR Honda pair of Sam Lowes and Jules Cluzel were in the mix right from the off with the Lincolnshire man taking the lead early on. It was a fine scrap between the two Hondas and Foret before Sofuoglu came through. Lowes eventually ran into tyre problems and Cluzel, making the switch from Moto2 this year, was just beaten to a debut podium by veteran Ten Kate man Broc Parkes who nipped into third on the run to the line.

Tiny South African Sheridan Morais took sixth place with another PTR bike, this time ridden by Ronan Quarmby, in seventh. Alex Baldolini, Vito Iannuzzo and Lucas Pesek rounded out the top ten. Britain's Martin Jessopp finished just outside the points in 17th.
