This week’s WorldSBK test at Portimao looks likely to be a Kawasaki-only affair with only the KRT and Orelac squads attending.
At the moment, Portugal is on the Covid-19 red list which means travel to and from the country is highly-restricted. However, KRT and Orelac have found a way around it.
None of the other teams are attending which means Yamaha’s first outing this year will probably be either at Jerez later next month or at the official Barcelona test.
The WorldSBK 20201 season opener is likely to be postponed even further as a race at Estoril is highly-unlikely for the same reason.
With two teams - Pata Yamaha and the works BMW mob - based in the UK plus Alex Lowes, Leon Haslam and Jonathan Rea all with their primary homes in the UK, it could prove problematic for Dorna to begin a series without three of its title contenders and the reigning champion.
The UK goverment website has declared: “If you have been in or through any of the countries listed below in the previous 10 days, you will be refused entry to the UK.” Portugal is on that list and is the only European country. It also applies to Madeira and the Azores.
It is likely Motorland Aragon will be the first race of the season, kicking off on May 21.
