Aruba Ducati's Chaz Davies will get his first go on the Panigale V4 at the official Jerez test later in the year but is hoping to sneak a ride previous to that.
The Welshman, who signed a new deal to partner Alvaro Bautista next season this week, is still recovering from a broken collarbone but was fast on race tyres at Portimao, testing 2019 Ohlins forks in readiness for his switch to the V4.
"We had a mix of stuff for this year and a little bit with the forks for next, even though that will change quite a bit but there is still stuff we can take from it and get a little head start," said Davies, speaking to bikesportnews.com at Portimao.
"We will definitely ride it at the official test in November but I'm hoping for a day before then. They have a pretty tight schedule. Pirro and Zanetti are riding it at the minute and any time they are on track, it's pretty dedicated.
"It's not much use me stepping in on those tests and cutting short Pirro's work. There are only a couple of prototype bikes at the moment. Hopefully, it will be sooner rather than later."
