Portimao WorldSBK test: Van der Mark leads at lunchtime

Strong winds on the second day of WorldSBK testing at Portimao held back the times to below the opening day level, with Michael van der Mark’s Pata Yamaha M1 topping the times at 1pm.

Given the strength of the winds, Kawasaki’s Jonathan Rea interrupted his session for a while, waiting to see if the winds would abate. He and his team plan to get him back out on track later today, having been second fastest in the first half of the day’s proceedings.

Xavi Fores (Barni racing Ducati) was third quickest early in a day when American Jake Gagne (Red Bull Honda) and his fellow countryman Patrick Jacobsen (Triple M Honda) each fell. Gagne, now up and walking with no visual ill effects, suffered a heavy impact and a slight head knock in the fall. He is now undergoing some precautionary checks after a short rest in his team-truck. He is not expected to take any more part in these tests. Jacobsen is fine, and his team are working on his bike now.

Leon Camier placed fourth on his Red Bull Honda, still with Cosworth electronics aboard, while Alex Lowes on the other Pata Yamaha was fifth.

Tom Sykes, down to one bike after his late crash on Sunday afternoon, was running sixth fastest halfway through Monday, while Marco Melandri, still working his way to find more stability on his set-up, was seventh fastest on his Aruba Ducati.

Seventh ranked Toprak Razgatlioglu (Puccetti Kawasaki) kept pace with the big names again, with Lorenzo Savadori’s Milwaukee Aprilia ninth fastest and Chaz Davies (Aruba Ducati) tenth at 1pm.
