Britain's Shane Byrne has finished the first day's World Superbike test at Portimao at the top of the timesheets, fending off Xerox Ducati's Michel Fabrizio and Yamaha's Ben Spies.

The reigning British Superbike Champion was fastest in the wet this morning, and managed to keep on top of the pile this afternoon, lapping at 1'44.265 on a drying track.

Byrne managed to lap within one second of Troy Bayliss' outright record on his Sterilgarda Ducati but had to put in a concerted effort later on in the session as both Spies and Fabrizio went quicker than him as the track continued to get grippier.

Leon Haslam was the quickest Honda rider with a 1'45.323, putting his Stiggy Fireblade in seventh just in front of Jonathan Rea and Carlos Checa, both on Ten Kate bikes.

The top ten was rounded out by Yukio Kagayama's Suzuki, with Broc Parkes the leading Kawasaki runner in 14th. The all-new BMW and Aprilia machines were out in full force at this test, with Troy Corser 15th on the S1000RR and Max Biaggi 16th on the Aprilia.
