Against all the odds, multiple WorldSSP Champion Kenan Sofuoglu will try and defend his title at Qatar this weekend despite suffering multiple hip fractures in a crash at Magny-Cours a couple of weeks ago.
The Turkish rider is the only man who can mathematically stop Yamaha’s Lucas Mathias from taking the 2017 title but is a mountain to climb as he is already 20 points behind the Frenchman. Sofuoglu passed a medical today and will be re-assessed after first practice tomorrow.
“After France it looked like we had finished our season after the crash. All the doctors were thinking it would be a minimum eight weeks in bed and the final recovery of maybe a minimum 12 weeks. The medical staff told me they would let me ride the bike tomorrow,” said the Puccetti Kawasaki rider.
“Then they want to see how I am and how I feel after first practice. I think it will be OK but they just want to make another assessment after the first free practice session. I will be very happy if I can really ride my bike.”
