Chaz Davies, second in the Superbike World Championship fight for the third time in four years, gave his insight into why they had to can the scheduled second WorldSBK race at Losail.

He agreed there was no other sensible decision to make than cancelling it. “I think so, yes,” said Davies as he and his team started setting up for their end of year ‘school photo’ in pitlane.

“Obviously we could have raced but I think every rider was in agreement that it wasn’t safe to do so. We would have gone out there, we would have tried, but somebody would have finished the season in hospital. That is when you have to club together and make the right decision, and that was definitely to not race. You can race in any conditions, quite honestly, but you have to make the call at the right time.”

Although it was an unsatisfying end to the season, especially at such a special event under the floodlights in Qatar, Davies appreciated that the powers-that-be understood that track conditions at were worsening in some places after an incident-strewn WorldSSP race, not getting better as all had expected with the vicious afternoon rains long gone.

“Race direction were great, they understood,” said Davies. “A lot of the Supersport guys are in the medical centre now, and taken quite hard hits, and it does not take much with the amount of water than was flowing through turn 15, to have a little bit of an upset through there, the water stays on the tyres, and they even have little cuts in their tyres, which is slightly better than us. It is just not safe, so I think they made the right decision. It is a little bit of an anti-climax, but it is the right decision, 100 per cent.”
