QATAR WSB: SPIES TAKES SECOND POLE IN A ROW

Superpole three
Ben Spies 1'57.280
Jakub Smrz 1'57.384
Max Biaggi 1'57.694

World Superbike rookie Ben Spies has taken his second pole position in a row at Qatar this afternoon, beating Jakub Smrz by just a tenth of a second with Max Biaggi in third.

Spies used the second of his qualifying tyres right at the start of the third session to claim fastest time while Smrz used his two qualifiers in the last session, which was a brave decision.

Spies team-mate Tom Sykes was just behind Noriyuki Haga in fifth place on a 1'57.878 with Shane Byrne rounding out the second row of the grid with a 2'00.021 using race tyres for the whole session.

Superpole two
Max Biaggi 1'57.836
Jakub Smrz 1'57.871
Tom Sykes 1'58.226

Shane Byrne left it until his last lap to haul himself into the final eight of Superpole three, desposing Roby Rolfo and Michel Fabrizio.

Ryuichi Kiyonari lost the front early in the session and failed to make it through even though he managed to get back to the pits for his second bike while team-mate Carlos Checa was sixth fastest. Noriyuki Haga squeezed through in fourth with his last lap.

Max Biaggi set the quickest lap of the weekend so far with a 1'57.836 which was only fractionally faster than Jakub Smrz. Tom Sykes was third fastest on a 1'58.226, on a race tyre.

Sensationally, Leon Haslam, Tommy Hill and Jonathan Rea were all knocked out in the opening Superpole session with Troy Corser deposing Rea on his very last lap with one minute to go.

Shane Byrne just stayed inside the top 16, less than a tenth faster than 16th-placed man Shinya Nakano. Tom Sykes was second fastest on a 1'58.803, just behind team-mate and quickest man Ben Spies who set a 1'58.782. Both Yamaha men are believed to have used the first of their two qualifying tyres.

Hill had a big crash at the end of the final free practice session and didn't come out on track until halfway through the session. It was a carbon copy of his Phillip Island qualifying luck. Ruben Xaus was complaining of front-end chatter.
