Castrol Honda's Jonathan Rea has undergone a successful operation to fix the radius bone he broke in his big morning warm-up crash at Misano's World Superbike round but surgeons also found ligament damage as they explored the injury.

Rea has torn the scapholunate ligament, which he has also done on the other arm, and that binds the scaphoid and lunate bones of the wrist together and provides a stabliser to the scaphoid. His period of rehabilitation is not yet known but the young Irishman remains upbeat. It is now unlikely Rea will be able to ride at the Brno WSB round in July.

"I was pretty upset when I got the news after the surgery yesterday because it means a longer rehab than we’d thought. It’s difficult, of course, and I’m devastated, but I’ve got a great team around me so I know I’ll get all the support I need to come back strong. As I said before, I want to be 100% when I get back on the bike so, at the moment, I’m not going to put a definitive timescale on that. I’ll just concentrate on getting back to fitness as fast and as completely as I can," said the Irishman.
