Kawasaki World Superbike new-boy Jonathan Rea has outpaced team-mate and outgoing world champion Tom Sykes on the second day of testing at Motorland Aragon, ending the day with a 1’51.1s lap.
Rea bounced back from a pre-lunch crash to go a tenth faster than Sykes on the ZX-10R but both were a second slower than quickest man Davide Guigliano on the works Ducati. The WSBK riders were using the same layout as MotoGP and Giugliano was only three seconds slower than Marc Marquez' pole time from this year, which makes you wonder what MotoGP teams are spending all that money on...
“We managed to set good times over a single lap but this was not the goal of our test. We mainly worked on our race pace and I feel there is still a lot to do before the start of the season,” said the Italian.
“We were quick straight out of the box because chassis wise our bike is very close to the one we used last year, while other teams have to make bigger changes. I feel really good on the Panigale and I’m looking forward to getting back on track at Jerez next week.”
Chaz Davies was only a third of a second slower than his factory Ducati team-mate.
