Sam Lowes came away from Balaton Park with two podiums to his name

Gold & Goose

Sam Lowes bounced back from his Saturday crash to claim two podiums on Sunday at the Hungarian World Superbike Round.

After a crash on Saturday afternoon, Sam Lowes redeemed himself on Sunday as he secured two podiums at the Balaton Park Circuit.

Lowes' podium on Sunday afternoon in Race Two was his first World Superbike podium in a full-distance race. However, he admitted that he did not have the pace to match Toprak Razgatlioglu and Nicolo Bulega, who finished ahead of him.

"I am really, really happy with the double podium today," Lowes said on Sunday after the Hungarian World Superbike Round.

"Also, the forecast that we had been talking about all weekend, with the potential of it being wet on Sunday. Woke up to wet weather, had a wet Warm-Up, then we had a dryish Superpole Race and a dry Race Two, so that is always better for all the riders.

"So to come away with two podiums, I am really happy. I struggled in the second half of the longer race, especially after the crash on Saturday, where I lost data from Race One.

"I am still really happy, Nicolo Bulega was faster than me, not massively, but maybe by a step. But Toprak Razgatlioglu was in a different race to us.

"After my performances in the first half of this season, I am really happy. Each weekend, I feel like we are getting a little bit stronger and a little bit stronger.

"So, a massive thank you to the team for putting me in the position to fight after the crash on Saturday."

Ahead of the Superpole Race at the Balaton Park Circuit, Lowes was confident in his choice of slick tyres on the drying circuit, when other riders opted for intermediates.

"When I went to the grid, I came to the grid and my first initial feeling was for dry tyres and dry bikes so I said to the guys to go in that direction and if it rains again it’s a gamble," Lowes explained.

"In the end, many riders went with this, and it was the correct call. When I got to the front, Toprak made a small mistake, and then Petrucci was on intermediates, so I managed to overtake him – I had a little bit of a gap, which obviously Toprak caught quite fast.

"But, after yesterday’s crash, I didn’t want to take too much risk, and I think, unless you’re at 100 per cent, it’s difficult to stay in front of Toprak.

"So, I was happy with second place."
