There will be an unusual twist to the Portimao WorldSBK round in 2024...

Organisers for the Portimao round of the 2024 WorldSBK Championship have announced that it will be feature late starting races as the sun comes down as part of new so-called 'sunset races'.

The Portuguese event, which will take place on 8-10 August, represents the seventh round of the season and will feature a schedule designed to make it more like a festival.

Attractions will include a parade lap, music concerts, an autograph session and 'track tour' on an open-top bus.

To accommodate the greater activities - which also include the usual Paddock Show - Race 1 and Race 2 of WorldSBK will start at 19.00pm (local) when it should be both cooler and see the riders completing as the sun is starting to set around the region.

The new programme has been made possible by WorldSBK shaking up the calendar in 2024 with events taking in place in August. The month is usually reserved as a summer hiatus for the riders and teams, but there will be two events - in Portugal and Hungary - taking place in August for 2024.

Instead, WorldSBK will have an extended break Rounds 3 and 4 (Assen and Misano) of eight weeks.
