VALENCIA WSB: HAGA DOES THE DOUBLE IN SPAIN

Xerox Ducati's Noriyuki Haga put in an unstoppable performance in the second World Superbike race at Valencia this afternoon, taking the double and maximum points.

The Japanese rider crossed the line just over five seconds ahead of poleman Ben Spies but the gap had been more than six seconds. Team-mate Michel Fabrizio took third place with DFX Ducati's Regis Laconi in fourth and Leon Haslam in fifth.

After the initial first corner bunfight which saw Laconi go under Haga but then run wide as Alstare Suzuki's Max Neukirchner took the lead. Haga passed Alstare Suzuki's Max Neukirchner for the lead with 19 laps to go, put the hammer down and checked out.

The Samurai of Slide then consistently lapped faster than anyone else on track, breaking the lap record he set in race one and took an immaculate win with only one minor off-track excursion.

Haslam had to watch his team-mate John Hopkins move through the field ahead of him as the American got a lightning start, but the Stiggy Honda man upped his pace and went past Hopkins with 19 laps to go.

The Derbyshire man then set of in pursuit of Carlos Checa, lapping as fast as Spies in second place, and caught and passed the Spaniard with 15 laps to go. Haslam then nicked fifth place from Neukirchner into turn one on lap 16 and finish top Honda.

Factory Yamaha's Tom Sykes made steady progress through the field from his appalling qualfying position, getting behind Haslam at the beginning, and the Huddersfield youngster ended the race in a battle with Max Biaggi, Hopkins and Ryuichi Kiyonari.

He finished the race in tenth place just in front of Sterilgarda Ducati's Shane Byrne who put in a late charge for 11th, stealing the position from Hopkins who lost four places in two laps.

Ten Kate Honda's Jonathan Rea had a race to forget, finishing in 13th with Tommy Hill ending the day out of the points in 22nd.
