Yamaha Racing's Ben Spies will lead the field into this afternoon's World Superbike Superpole at Valencia as one of only two men to better Max Biaggi's fastest laptime from yesterday in a sesion that saw the top 21 riders covered by one second.
In a qualifying session that didn't come alive until halfway through, Spies went quickest by just seven one-thousandths of a second with 23 minutes to go posting a 1'34.709 lap and he was run close by DFX Ducati's Regis Laconi who ran a 1'34.714.
Aprilia's Biaggi didn't better his time from yesterday but remains third while Michel Fabrizio is the fastest Xerox Ducati in fourth place and deposing Alstare Brux Suzuki's Yukio Kagayama down onto the provisional second row.
BMW's Troy Corser got himself up into fourth place with 15 minutes to go and then began to slip down the order until a last-gasp lap in the final seconds saw the veteran Aussie claw back up to sixth. The second Xerox Ducati of Noriyuki Haga ended the session in seventh, with countryman Ryuichi Kiyonari in eighth and German Max Neukirchner in ninth place.
Reigning Superstock Cup Champion Brendan Roberts got himself into the top 12 just behind fellow Aussie's Broc Parkes with a great lap and outqualified his team-mate Jakub Smrz who took 12th place.
Despite some quick laps, Ten Kate Honda's Jonathan Rea finds himself down in 13th with Shane Byrne in 15th and Spies' team-mate Tom Sykes one place behind. The former British Superbike man couldn't better his lap time from yesterday.
Stiggy Honda's Leon Haslam and John Hopkins both squeaked into Superpole with 19th and 20th places but with the top 21 covered by one second, they shouldn't take it to heart. Althea Honda's Tommy Hill just failed to make it, crashing out in the final couple of minutes.
