VALENCIA WSB: SPIES SHATTERS RECORD ON WAY TO POLE

Superpole three
Ben Spies 1'33.270
Regis Laconi 1'33.955
Noriuyki Haga 1'34.082

Yamaha Racing Ben Spies obliterated the Superbike lap record at Valencia today in the third and final Superpole session, sticking in a 1'33.270 time which is half a second faster than Max Neukirchner's outright lap record.

The American used his last qualifying tyre in the final two minutes of the session and put in what looked like an effortless lap to secure his third pole position of the season.

Frenchman Regis Laconi was the polesitter early on until deposed by Spies, but the DFX Ducati rider managed to put in a 1'33.955 lap right at the end of the session on what looked like a soft race tyre.

Ten Kate Honda's Jonathan Rea ended as top Brit, just edging out his team-mate Carlos Checa for seventh place.

Superpole two
Ben Spies 1'33.868
Yukio Kagayama 1'33.976
Regis Laconi 1'34.150

Ben Spies scorched under the 1'34s barrier on a qualifying tyre with a 1'33.868 laptime before his Yamaha gave up the ghost and he had to walk back to pitlane. Yukio Kagayama also used a qualifier for his lap, as did Regis Laconi.

Shane Byrne crashed and may well have broken a collarbone while both the Stiggy Hondas went out. Leon Haslam waited until the session was half over before going out but the gamble didn't pay off. Carlos Checa got the last place in Superpole three even after crashing early in the second part.

Team-mate Shinya Nakano broke his collarbone in a crash and did not take part in Superpole. Shane Byrne had the fastest time using a qualifier on his last lap until Carlos Checa went quicker. John Hopkins just rescued himself with a minute to go, lifting himself up to 12th place. Brendan Roberts was also in the danger zone for a lot of the session but also got through.
