After impressive tests in Portimao and Jerez, the 25-year-old has continued his momentum to Phillip Island. Vickers ended the afternoon session eighth on the timesheets with a best lap of 1:29.982, placing himself 1.217 seconds behind Nicolo Bulega.

"Day one done here, it was my first experience of Phillip Island, and wow what a circuit it is," Vickers said on social media.

"It's so, so fast I could not get over how fast Turn One was, I still have not got my head around it. Some amazing corners, I really enjoyed my first laps here in Phillip Island.

"The team did a fantastic job and gave me a great bike. We were able to improve a lot at the end and my feeling is getting better and better.

"I am super happy, and I am really looking forward to Day Two here. The weather has been kind to us today so let's hope we can get another solid day in tomorrow!"
