World Superbikes is not in crisis and is performing as expected for a roadbike-based class, according to Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta, and changes to the raceday format have pleased promoters.
Speculation has and continues to be rife that the Spanish-based rights holders are unhappy with spectator numbers at their second-string championship’s events but Ezpeleta says that he is pleased with the way WSBK is performing and that it isn’t in trouble.
“I don’t agree. The difference compared to the previous promoter is that we declare the true numbers. We don’t inflate the number of spectators. We know because the promoter gave us the data. The spectators have increased in every circuit and the level of promotion and media, TV exposure has improved,” he told BSN.
“It’s the level of a championship for street-derived bikes. We won’t change the technical side. The race one has been changed to Saturday and the promoters are happy. We will continue with the same system we have done with MotoGP, in the interest of the championship and speaking with all the parties involved.”
