After one day of Practice it is once again Alvaro Bautista who leads the way once again at the front of the World Superbike field after signing a new contract for 2024 with the Aruba.it Racing - Ducati Team.
Bautista announced that he would be staying on the World Superbike grid in 2024 yesterday and today he has claimed top spot after two Practice sessions in Barcelona. The reigning Champion led a Ducati 1-2 after the afternoon session and once again is the man to beat going into the races.
Behind Bautista was the man who topped the first practice session, Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati). The Italian is now in the hunt to remain Bautista's teammate in 2024 and has looked strong throughout the opening day at Round Four of the season.
Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) was outside of the top ten midway through the second session of the day. However, in the latter stages he put together a lap that put him into third place overall.
The Texan, Garrett Gerloff (Bonovo Action BMW), had an impressive afternoon as he was inside the top five all session and ended up fourth overall when the chequered flag came out.
Then in fifth and sixth were two Yamaha riders, however it was a satellite Yamaha in fifth. Dominique Aegerter (GRT Yamaha) finished the session in fifth place as the top Yamaha rider. Just behind the Swiss rider was the 2021 World Superbike Champion, Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK Team), the Turkish rider was outside the top five in sixth place.
Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) is on the hunt for a factory ride in the 2024 season, but has a step to make this weekend to challenge the factory Ducati riders as he finished FP2 in seventh place.
British rider, Scott Redding (RoKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team), finished the second session of the weekend in eighth place and had a decent showing throughout both Friday sessions.
Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK Team) suffered a small crash midway through the second session this afternoon, but still managed to finish inside the top ten as he finished ninth overall.
The former MotoGP rider, Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team), rounded out the top ten of the second practice session.
The other three British riders on the World Superbike grid all finished outside of the top ten in the second session. Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team) finished in 14th place and struggled throughout the afternoon session. Bradley Ray (Yamaha Motoxracing Yamaha WorldSBK Team) tried a new geometry setup this afternoon, which did not seem to make any improvements for him as he finished 22nd overall. The final British rider on the grid is 2013 World Superbike Champion, Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing), who had electrical issues in the first practice session and then ended the second session in 23rd.
