BMW’s Michael van der Mark’s Estoril weekend lasted one and half laps on Friday morning after a turn ten crash brought out the red flags in FP1.
Having just begun his first flying lap of the Portuguese weekend, van der Mark crashed heavily and was struggling to get to his feet with medical assistance, and red flags dispatched as his BMW M1000RR lay stricken across the track.
The Dutchman, who was already recovering from a spiral fracture on his lower right leg, was taken to the circuit medical centre and diagnosed with a fracture to the neck of his right femur before being dispatched to the Lisbon’s Hospital de Sao Jose for further checks and treatment.
