WorldSBK Jerez: Baz draws first blood in Spain

Ten Kate Yamaha’s Loris Baz has drawn first blood in the opening WorldSBK free practice at Jerez, leading reigning champion Jonathan Rea by 0.062s with Alvaro Bautista in third.

Baz set a 1’40.249 on his tenth lap but then his R1 expired on the run up to turn one and that was the end of his session.

Kawasaki’s Rea had been in charge until Baz’s effort with a 1’40.311 while Bautista finished on a 1’40.392 to end 0.143s off the pace.

Reigning BSB king Scott Redding jumped into fourth place with a few minutes left, putting in a 1'40.442 which pushed back Aruba Ducati team-mate Chaz Davies one spot. The Welshman finished only 0.030s down.

Toprak Razgatlioglu ended the morning in sixth place and 0.258s off the pace with works Yamaha team-mate Michael van der Mark one place behind and a further 0.058s in arrears.

Leon Haslam, on the second factory Honda, 0.354s off for eighth place with series leader Alex Lowes putting his Kawasaki in ninth and 0.003s behind his old mate.

America's Garrett Gerloff was next along with a 1'40.773 meaning the top ten are covered by less than half a second.

The out-of-retirement Marco Melandri trailed countryman Federico Caricasulo in 12th place with Tati Mercado, Tom Sykes and Max Schieb completing the top 15.

Eugene Laverty was 16th with Xavi Fores and Sandro Cortese behind him. Michael Rinaldi had a weird crash at Pedrosa where he fell off the side of his Panigale V4R like a footrest had broken.
