WorldSBK Jerez Test: New parts leave van der Mark on top on Thursday

Michael van der Mark topped the times in day two of the Jerez WorldSBK winter test as BMW brought its action to a close.

While Kawasaki and Honda are set to return to the Andalusian circuit on Friday, the German outfit called time on its final action of 2021 on Thursday afternoon.

Van der Mark was joined by his new teammate for 2022, Scott Redding, as the Brit made the move from Ducati. The Dutchman capitalised on a promising first season aboard the BMW M 1000 RR, in which he secured a debut win and two additional podiums, by continuing to work with his SMR-led squad and analyse 2022 engine specifications and chassis modifications.

The 29-year-old topped Thursday’s unofficial times with a best effort of 1’39.788 after 47 laps around the Spanish circuit.

“It was good to have a test even if it was so late in the year,” van der Mark said on Thursday evening. "We had a lot of new components and items to try on the bike. At this test we barely played around with the set-up of the bike, we mainly tried new parts to figure out what brings improvement and what does not. We need to get some ideas and start producing the new things.

“It has been a really good test and I am really happy with a lot of new things. It was great to gather good information and now I am looking forward to a short Christmas break.”
