GMT94’s Jules Cluzel claimed his third WorldSSP Superpole of 2021 in Argentina on Saturday, to head the grid for this afternoon’s first race.
Cluzel’s dominance was clear to see as the only rider capable of 1’41 pace, with the Frenchman claiming a new lap record at the San Juan Villicum circuit. Steven Odendaal and Manuel Gonzales joined the all-Yamaha front row in the closing stages, with 0.005s separating the pair at the flag.
Title challengers Dominique Aegerter and Odendaal were straight out the blocks as Supersport Superpole began in Argentina. Gonzales heading the times with his second effort, a 1’42.693 lap the fastest the Spaniard had managed so far around San Juan this weekend.
Friday hero Cluzel was next to impress, half a second clear, with Aegerter and Valentin Debise slotting into second and third shortly after.
The top three all ramped up as the second runs got going, Cluzel the first rider to break a 1’42 barrier, claimed a new lap record of 1’41.740 with his seventh attempt. Odendaal improved from the edge of the top 10, to second, three-tenths adrift of the Frenchman with Can Öncü slotting into third.
Aegerter and Gonzales both looked to push in the closing seconds but with the laps falling away, Cluzel secured the pole position for his GMT94 Yamaha team despite hitting the pits early. Gonzales claiming the final front row place, alongside Odendaal, with his final effort.
Öncü dropped to fourth, to head the second row from Aegerter and Debise, with Raffaele de Rosa, Peter Sebestyen and Niki Tuuli on row three.
