WorldSSP Catalunya FP1 Results | Sofuoglu takes a surprise lead in the opening session of the weekend

Bahattin Sofuoglu took his MV Agusta to the top spot of the first practice session of the weekend as he held back the World Supersport Championship contenders.

The Turkish rider, who is the nephew of five time World Supersport Champion Kenan Sofuoglu, secured first place in Free Practice One with a time of 1m 45.582.

Close behind the MV Agusta rider in second place was Ten Kate Racing Yamaha rider, Stefano Manzi (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha), the Italian lies second in the Championship and second after the opening session in Catalunya.

Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team rider and Championship leader, Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team), finished third place in FP1 as he was 0.199 seconds behind the MV Agusta.

Two other riders on board the Ducati Panigal V2 followed behind Bulega. Yari Montella (Barni Spark Racing Team) finished the opening session in fourth place, 0.424 seconds off of first place. Then in fifth place was the experienced World Supersport rider, Raffaele de Rosa (Orelac Racing Verdnatura), who was 0.452 seconds behind the leader.

Moto2 veteran Marcel Schrotter (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) took his MV Agusta to sixth place in standings in the opening practice session of the weekend, as he was 0.504 seconds behind his teammate. A late crash saw Jorge Navarro (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha), another Moto2 veteran, finished in seventh place after a late crash saw him miss the final moments of the session.

The top Triumph rider, Niki Tuuli (Dynavolt Triumph), finished in eighth place on his Triumph Street Triple, only 0.700 seconds off of top spot. Federico Caricasulo (Althea Racing Team) took his Ducati Panigal V2 to ninth place.

British rider Tom Booth-Amos (Motozoo ME AIR Racing), who is fresh from British Supersport action, rounded out the top ten as he finished tenth on his Kawasaki.

Fellow British riders John McPhee (Vince64 by Puccetti Racing) finished down in 16th place, Tarran Mackenzie (Petronas MIE Honda Team) ended up in 28th on his Honda and Harry Truelove (Dynavolt Triumph) finished 31st on his Triumph.

Free Practice Two will take place at 16:00 Catalan time - 15:00 UK time.
