Max Neukirchner sprung a surprise by taking his second win of the year at Misano with a late charge from 10th on the grid.
Proving the value of looking after your tyres, Neukirchner made a slow start before slicing though to the front in the second half of the race as others started to stuggle with grip.
Ruben Xaus initally seemed to be proving that BMW's decision to sign him to its new WSB team next year was a good one, leading for more than half the race before falling back to fourth at the flag behind Neukirchner and pre-race favourites Corser and Bayliss. Despite briefly leading and fighting to the finish, Corser couldn't convert his pole position into a win in front of a crowd which included Valentino Rossi, fresh back from yesterday's Assen MotoGP race.
PSG-1 Kawasaki's special Misano paint schemes didn't bring riders Laconi and Tamada any luck, as both ended their races with their unfamiliar-looking blue machines in the gravel. Other big-name crashers included Xerox Ducati man Fabrizio, who took Sterilgarda Ducati's Max Biaggi down with him.
