Two-time World Superbike Champion James Toseland calls out MIE Honda over their 'disappointing' Honda package.
In the opening session of the Pirelli Emilia-Romagna World Superbike Round, TNT Sports commentator James Toseland was vocal about the performance of the Petronas MIE Honda Racing Team.
The two-time World Superbike Champion went on to label the MIE Honda CBR1000RR-R package as 'disappointing' as Tarran Mackenzie ended the session in 21st, with a lap time that was 0.456 seconds slower than Toseland's own from 2007.
"I really do not know what is happening with the MIE Honda Team," Toseland said during Free Practice One.
"It is so disappointing the package that they are able to give the riders, they are doing 1:36's. I am not being funny, but we were doing 1:35's 20 years ago, that is a fact.
"I am really not sure how a 2007 Ten Kate Fireblade can still be half a second faster than the Fireblade of today.
"Something is seriously wrong with how they build that bike in that team. I really feel for Taz [Tarran Mackenzie], because that should not be the case, should it?
"Twenty years on and you are still slower."
Mackenzie went on to end the day in 20th place in Free Practice Two as he set a lap time of 1:35.084. Despite the 0.944-second improvement during the afternoon, Mackenzie's best lap was 0.925 seconds slower than the fastest Honda rider of Iker Lecuona.
After five rounds of the 2025 World Superbike Championship, the former British Superbike Champion finds himself 19th in the standings on nine points.
Mackenzie's best result from this season was a ninth-place finish in the Superpole Race at the Dutch World Superbike Round in April.
Since Mackenzie scored points in all three races in the Netherlands, the MIE Racing Honda squad has not picked up another point.
