Former Moto2 rider and European Stock Championship leader Borja Gomez has passed away at the age of 20.
It has been confirmed by Team Honda Laglisse that Borja Gomez has passed away at the Magny-Cours circuit after an incident in the opening Free Practice session of Round Three of the European Stock Championship.
The 20-year-old came into the third round of the season as the series leader after finishing second in the season opener at Estoril and claiming victory at Jerez.
A statement from Team Honda Laglisse regarding Gomez's passing reads:
"With all the pain in our hearts, we regret to announce that Borja Gomez has passed away at the Magny-Cours circuit after a serious accident in the first Free Practice of the European Stock Championship.
"Beyond his exceptional talent as a pilot, we will remember Borja as the great person he was. His kindness and smile will last forever. We will always carry him in our hearts.
"On behalf of the whole Team Laglisse, we want to pass on our condolences to all his family and friends in these hard times that they are going through.
"We love you, Borja. Rest in peace."
Gomez began his career racing in Supermoto in Spain, before racing in the Kawasaki Cup in 2019. He later moved on to the Supersport Championship in the Spanish Superbike Championship, where he finished second in 2021.
In 2022, he finished as the runner-up in the Spanish Superbike Championship with the Cardoso Team. He then went on to sign with Fantic Racing for the 2023 Moto2 World Championship, where he competed in 13 Grands Prix for the team.
Most recently, he has been competing in the FIM Stock European Championship and has been testing for Team HRC in the World Superbike Championship.
