Can Oncu will test the Yamaha R1 at Cremona

Gold & Goose

In an attempt to convince Yamaha to sign him for the 2026 World Superbike season, Can Oncu will test the R1 this week.

Ahead of the World Superbike paddocks' return from summer break on the 5th of September for the French Round at Magny-Cours, every manufacturer will participate in tests.

Over at MotorLand Aragon, Ducati, Honda, BMW, Kawasaki, and Bimota will take part in a two-day test. However, Yamaha will head to a different destination as the Japanese manufacturer will head to Cremona.

The biggest talking point from Yamaha's test at Cremona will be the fact that Can Oncu will get his highly anticipated test on the Yamaha R1 on Wednesday, the 27th of August.

Oncu will become the second Yamaha World Supersport rider to test Yamaha's factory R1 this season, as he follows in Stefano Manzi's footsteps, who tested the machine at Misano, and has signed to the GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team for 2026 and 2027.

The purpose behind the Turkish rider's test on the Yamaha Superbike at the Italian circuit is to give him a trial run for the available Pata Maxus Yamaha seat for the 2026 season.

It has become obvious that Jonathan Rea will not remain with the factory Yamaha team for a third season, and a replacement will need to be signed.

Oncu's name is in the running for the factory R1 as he sits second in the World Supersport Championship, and a test on the R1 could make or break the 22-year-old's chances of securing the factory ride.

However, it is worth mentioning that the ride is not certain to go to Oncu for the 2026 season, as current Prima Pramac Racing Yamaha MotoGP rider Miguel Oliveira is also in the running.

The Portuguese rider was originally contracted to a two-year deal with Yamaha in MotoGP, but after completing a year with the Japanese manufacturer, they appears to be ready to move on from the MotoGP race winner.

If Oncu wants to solidify his position as the favourite for the factory Yamaha ride, he must put in an impressive performance at the one-day test at Cremona this week.
