Smiths Triumph’s Billy McConnell stormed to his second-ever Motorpoint British Supersport double after beating Alistair Seeley on the brakes in Lodge on the last lap at Oulton Park.
Seeley took the holeshot from pole position with eventual race winner McConnell making a poor start settling into sixth place. Seeley was quickly joined at the front by Smiths Triumph’s Graeme Gowland and Gearlink Kawasaki’s Glenn Irwin.
McConnell began to make his way through the field, getting the better of both Luke Jones and Luke Mossey before hooking on to the back of the leading trio. McConnell then dived under the inside of Luke Stapleford to take third at the first corner of Old Hall.
The leading trio of Seeley, McConnell and Gowland then began to detach themselves from the chasing pack and the battle for the race victory commenced. The trio were exchanging blows lap after lap, the pick of the bunch being McConnell bravely moving past Seeley on the inside as the pair drove over Clay Hill.
It went to the last lap with Seeley leading from McConnell. The Northern Irishman rode defensively the whole way round, blocking any attack McConnell wanted to make up until the final corner. Seeley left a gap for McConnell to attack and attack he did. Despite Seeley leaning on top of the Adelaide rider, the Aussie was able to take the chequered flag and only his second double victory, closely followed by Seeley and Gowland.
As the middle-weight class leaves Oulton Park, McConnell holds the championship lead by thirteen points ahead of Glenn Irwin.
Profile Triumph’s Luke Mossey clinched a lonely fourth place, eight seconds ahead of Glenn Irwin, who got the better of Luke Mossey and Luke Jones to take fifth. Appleyard Macadam’s Jake Dixon ended the race in eighth place with Sam Hornsey and Taylor Mackenzie rounding out the top ten.
