Gearlink Kawasaki’s Glenn Irwin claimed his third Motorpoint British Supersport of the year after passing Luke Mossey on the penultimate lap. Rain was reported around the circuit but Irwin continued to push on through the light rain to take victory.
Teccare Triumph’s Mossey grabbed the holeshot from pole position and began to open out a comfortable advantage. He held 1.2 seconds over Irwin, with Northumberland rider Graeme Gowland another second back in third.
Rain was reported in the first sector, from Redgate through to the Old Hairpin, but the leading trio pushed on regardless, with Gowland posting a new lap record during the ten lap event.
With two laps remaining, the rain worsened and Irwin closed the second gap down to nothing in the space of three corners. Clearly unhappy with the conditions, race leader pointed to the heavens frantically to warn of the rain. However, the red flag wasn’t brought out and Irwin, clearly unfazed by the rain, dived under the inside of Mossey at the Foggy Esses.
Mossey tried to fight back on the last lap but Irwin held on for his third victory of the year, all three coming in suspect conditions. Gowland brought the Smiths Triumph home in third place, ahead of teammate McConnell in fourth, allowing the Northerner to cut the Aussies championship lead down to just five points.
Gearlink Kawasaki’s Luke Hedger crossed the line in fifth place, having fought off Sam Hornsey and Luke Stapleford in the final laps. Mar-Train Yamaha’s Alistair Seeley continued to struggle, only managing to finish in eighth. The Northern Irishman is now 48 points adrift of McConnell in the championship, with a second Supersport title seemingly drifting away. Rounding out the top ten was Luke Jones and Taylor Mackenzie.
