Dickies British Supersport wildcards Quattro Spirit had a dream debut outing with their self-built Moto2 at Donington, taking second place in the only race of the weekend but courting some controversy in the process.
Alastair Seeley was in the hunt for the win all race long, battling with eventual winner Tarran Mackenzie, the Gearlink Kawasaki duo of Ben Currie and Andrew Irwin, plus Keith Farmer and Jack Kennedy. He eventually grabbed runner-up spot but scores no points as the bike is not eligible, giving rise to comments that it shouldn’t be there at all.
None of this has fazed team owner Tony Scott, who was over the moon: “It was a dream weekend, given the issues we still need to overcome with the bike we could not have asked for a better result. If we can improve for Brands Hatch as well as moving on the geometry of the bike, then we should be in a strong position.”
The Spirit costs the business end of £70k and runs on slicks instead of the road-spec control tyres in Superpsort. It is powered by a 675cc triple in a Metisse frame with a Harris swingarm, and weighs 142kg full of fluid. Riders Seeley and Dean Ellison had only managed a couple of test days before the Donington opener.
BSB series director Stuart Higgs has confirmed to BSN the team will be allowed to run in as many races as they want this year, which will no doubt spark some more talking points.
