Silverstone BSB: Lowes stakes claim to title

WFR Honda's Alex Lowes has gone from zero to hero in the pace of three MCE British Superbikes and can now stake a claim to the 2012 title as he took two wins at Silverstone to push past reigning champion Tommy Hill into third.

The Lincolnshire man barely made it into the Showdown stages at all but is now in with a shot at claiming a title. He is 24 points behind leader Shane Byrne but with 75 on the table at Brands and a little luck, it can be done.

“The bike was set-up so well that I really enjoyed riding and felt good all of the way. It was a case of not getting to excited as I got ahead in that race for the first time as the bike was working so well. I had chosen to run with the harder tyre compound and had no grip issues throughout," said Lowes.

“I have worked hard after last year which killed my confidence but the team has stood by me and I did though I didn’t expect all of this. Maybe we have had a bit of good luck but once I had secured a place in the Showdown at Cadwell Park I didn’t want to look stupid so I was determined to get good results in these final stages.

“The title is not something I expect but I want more podiums. I only just crept into the Showdown so it doesn’t seem right to be talking about the title but I intend to enjoy the final three races and see what comes. What will be will be.”
