Tarran Mackenzie’s profitable season continued at the weekend as he added the Snetterton Race of Aces trophy to the King of Brands and King of Donington titles won earlier in the year.
The McAMS Yamaha rider won two of the three races held at the Norfolk venue and with a second place in the other, he reduced team-mate Jason O’Halloran’s advantage in the podium credits tally to 30, with three more races to go before the Showdown starts in earnest.
The 25-year old looked strong all weekend and after taking third in qualifying, he bided his time in the early stages of Saturday’s race before taking the lead soon after pole-sitter and early race leader Glenn Irwin crashed out.
“I was happy following Glenn at the start and when Jason came by we had a gap to fourth place so I sat behind him,” Mackenzie said afterwards. “When Glenn crashed I was happy following Jason but when the gap started to come down I wanted to take the lead in case something happened as there are a lot of passing opportunities at Snetterton and I didn’t want to get involved in any of that.”
Mackenzie duly controlled the race from the front and although he ran wide at the final corner, he was able to get the power down to edge out the rapidly closing Tommy Bridewell by just 0.069s
“I got to the front and rode my own race. I didn’t set an outstanding pace but I was just comfortable and managing the tyre. On the last lap I wanted to push harder and get a bit of a gap but I made a mistake on the last corner running wide on entry and then had a big wheelie on exit. I just shut my eyes and got to the line to take another win.”
Starting Sunday’s first race from the third row could have been problematical but he was soon running in the front two positions and involved in a titanic tussle for the victory with team-mate O’Halloran. He had to give best on this occasion but bounced back later in the day to win the five-lap final race.
“I felt comfortable in Sunday’s first race, setting my own pace, but could see from my pit board that Jason and Tommy were close. Jason came by but I wanted to keep leading and we ended up having a bit of a scrap in the last five laps. He double bluffed me a bit and when I stayed defensive at the end of the back straight, he was able to go round the outside.”
“The last race was hectic and I’m always stressed out ahead of such short races. It’s never easy going back out on used tyres as you’ve used the best part of them in the first start but I had a plan in my head to be leading by lap four and that’s how it panned out.”
“It’s been a great weekend and I didn’t expect it after crashing at Cadwell. It was important to get a lot of podium credits and to have a successful weekend with one round to go before the Showdown is key.”
