Assen BSB: Gowland bags Supersport pole with outright lap record

Smith Triumph’s Graeme Gowland set an all new outright Motorpoint British Supersport lap record, during the qualifying session at Assen. A 1’39.216 was enough for him to bag his third pole of the year, and was one tenth quicker than Techcare’s Luke Mossey this afternoon.

The front row was rounded up by Profile Racing’s Luke Stapleford – after his best lap of a 1’39.446 was good enough to start from third on the grid. The top three were all inside the lap record, that is still held by former World Superbike rider, now BSB racer, Christian Iddon.

At first it was Mossey who proved the rider to catch after he lapped a 1’39.617, ahead of Gowland and Stapleford. But as the Techcare rider kept improving he wasn’t quick enough to hold off the mighty Smiths machine.

The Geordie propelled his way to the top of the timesheets and set a new outright lap record – after a 1’39.234, with a handful of minutes remaining. Meanwhile his teammate, Billy McConnell had to settle for a second row start, after his was 0.4 seconds off that third spot on the grid, which is vacated by Stapleford.

The Australian native heads the second row, which is completed by Acumen’s Luke Jones and title challenger, MarTrain Yamaha’s Alastair Seeley. His fellow compatriot, Gearlink Kawasaki’s Glenn Irwin finds himself starting off the third row, with Pirelli National Superstock 600 challenger, Kyle Ryde and Sam Hornsey for company. American rider, Team Traction Control’s James Rispoli rounds up the top ten, and heads row four.
