Assen BSB: Jones wins Supersport thriller as Mackenzie extends title lead

Luke Jones took a dominant maiden victory in a dramatic Dickies British Supersport Championship feature race in which Tarran Mackenzie snatched third place at the final corner from Andy Irwin. That move gave Stauff Connect Academy Kawasaki rider Mackenzie a lead of a dozen points over James Westmoreland who finished sixth as they go into the Brands Hatch finale.

Rain just before the start delayed the action, with frantic work to change tyres, ahead of the twelve lapper. Poleman Westmoreland was sluggish off the line and Irwin was quickly in front, just from Mackenzie. But there was ill-luck for Brad Ray who strayed wide in mid-pack, dropping well back.

Irwin was charging on with Luke Jones coming through into second from Joe Francis at the end of an eventful first lap which saw Mackenzie dropping back into seventh from Westmoreland with Sprint race winner Mason Law back in thirteenth, four places up on Ray.

Mackenzie was charging back, picking up a couple of places on the second lap while Francis took over in second from Jones as they pursued Irwin.  Scott Deroue held on as his bike swerved out of line, keeping fourth but only a third of a second up on Mackenzie while Westmoreland was seventh.

Jones was reeling in Irwin as the sun shone and the circuit began to dry and after four laps there was less than half a second between them and it was all change next time around as the Herefordshire rider nosed his Triumph ahead. Francis was strong in third from Deroue from Mackenzie who in turn was 1.708secs up on his title rival Westmoreland.

David Allingham was seventh from Ben Currie while Law was tenth, just ahead of Luke Hedger while Ray was running fourteenth as at half distance Jones had a lead of 3.349secs over Irwin who was only half a second clear of Francis.  No surprise that Francis was through into second place next time around. His CAME BPT Yamaha team-mate Westmoreland though was losing sixth place for Currie.

Irwin was hungry, attacking Francis, trading places amid a great scrap, with little between them as Jones forged further clear, running almost eleven seconds clear at three quarters distance. Deroue was fourth from Mackenzie while Westmoreland was trying all he knew to grab sixth from Currie.

Deroue had another scary moment and that let Mackenzie through to fourth and then the Dutch rider was taken by Currie and Westmoreland. Jones was in control at the front, taking the victory on the Acumen Industrial Service Triumph by 9.515secs from Francis. And in a dramatic finish Mackenzie snatched third from Irwin, by 0.017ses, at the final corner. Currie ran fifth ahead of Westmoreland, Allingham, Currie and Law.
