Brands BSB: Dixon snatches first Supersport pole

Appleyard Yamaha’s Jake Dixon bagged his first Motorpoint British Supersport qualifying pole position of his career, at a very damp Brands Hatch GP circuit this afternoon.

The youngster was able to hold off the charges of Smiths Triumph’s Graeme Gowland and MarTrain’s Alastair Seeley to snatch the number one spot on the starting grid, for the sprint race in a few hours time.

Dixon's best lap of a 1’29.072 was two tenths quicker than Gowland at the flag, but the Yamaha lad ended the session in the gravel - but was unhurt. Seeley completes the front row, after a 1’29.493 rotation, a further four tenths of a second behind the Appleyard backed Yamaha of the Dover based rider.

Seeley was the rider who initially set the pace with a 1’32.855 after five minutes out on track, with American rookie, Team Traction Control’s James Rispoli six seconds off the pace. Then the Keith Flint backed racer clocked a 1’31.482, blasting the time set by the Northern Irishman to get provisional pole, with 20 minutes remaining.

Seeley went nearly half a second faster moments later, to edge ahead of Rispoli. But the Yank soon ended up in the gravel, after a coming down at Paddock Hill Bend, ending his chances of clinching his debut pole in the class. He was then taken to the med centre to be assessed.

Appleyard Yamaha’s Bjorn Estment was languishing just outside the top ten, but a 1’30.898 was more than enough top place him third fastest, with 13 minutes left of the session. Meanwhile Gowland charged on ahead to lap in the 1’30’s, but was still two tenths too slow to match the pace of Seeley who bettered his time to 1’30.610, on the ten minute mark.

SGR Racing’s Josh Daley was the quickest Evo rider out on the grid, but he had a technical problem, meaning he lost out on the accolade, after Collisions Recovery’s Danny Webb went two seconds quicker – a 1’31.818, to place him sixth overall, after 39 minutes out on a drying track. But the rider was pipped to the post by T3 Racing's, and current Evo class leader, Alex Olsen.

With five minutes remaining Gowland found an extra tenth to out-paced the diminutive Seeley to snatch provisional pole, but that latest 30 seconds as Dixon stormed to the top of the timesheets with a 1’29.724.

But as Dixon was on a roll he crashed at Hawthorn Bend whilst heading the sheets, but he had already done enough to bag his first qualifying pole position, with Smiths Triumph’s Billy McConnell, Tyco Suzuki’s Taylor Mackenzie and Profile Racing’s Luke Stapleford completing the second row of the grid. Gearlink Kawasaki’s Glenn Irwin and Olsen rounded off the top ten.
