Charlie Nesbitt (RS Racing Kalex) came out on top of a thrilling Quattro Group British Supersport/GP2 Cup Sprint race at Donington Park on Saturday afternoon, the GP2 rider overhauling Jack Kennedy (HEL Performance/Bournemouth Kawasaki) in the closing stages.
Kennedy also lost out in the battle for the lead Supersport competitor with season-long rival Bradley Perie (Appleyard Macadam Yamaha) squeezing by at the chicane on the final lap.
It was Ben Currie (Gearlink Kawasaki) who made the early running from Lee Johnston (Ashcourt Racing Yamaha), Kennedy and Harry Truelove (Truelove Brothers Racing Yamaha) and although Kennedy took over the lead second time around, Currie was back in front by lap four.
By then, the race had developed into an eight-way fight for supremacy with Kyle Smith (Dynavolt Triumph), Korie McGreevy (Mar-Train Racing Yamaha), Nesbitt and Perie also in the mix.
As expected, positions continually changed and as the race entered its final third, Truelove was leading from Currie, Kennedy, Perie, Nesbitt and Brandon Paasch who was having one of his best rides of the year on the second Dynavolt Triumph. Johnston and particularly Smith had dropped back and were now, seemingly, out of contention.
Lap 16 saw Kennedy re-take the lead from Truelove but Nesbitt and Perie were moving forward all the time and it was still anyone’s race.
However, back-markers on lap 18 split the pack and it was now between just Nesbitt, Kennedy and Perie, the GP2 Cup man ultimately coming out on top. Kennedy looked surprised to see Perie come by at the final corner and after leading for so long, he had to settle for the final podium position.
Paasch, Currie and McGreevy completed the top six - Paasch the third best Supersport rider - with Johnston salvaging seventh from Truelove who came off worse in the shuffle through the backmarkers. Smith and Mason Law (Spirit Motocorsa) completed the top ten, the latter the second GP2 runner with Jack Scott (JJ Racing Harris) the third runner past the chequered flag.
