Harry Truelove took pole position for this afternoon’s Quattro Group British Supersport/GP2 Championship race at Cadwell Park with the Lincoln rider lapping more than half a second quicker than the rest of the field on his Truelove Brothers Racing Yamaha.
With rain drops falling before quickly fading away, championship leader Bradley Perie (Appleyard Macadam Yamaha) took the early initiative before Truelove took over firstly with a 1’30.460 and then a 1’30.053 but his advantage was miniscule with Jack Kennedy (HEL Performance/Bournemouth Kawasaki) moving into second and just 0.003s adrift.
Leading GP2 rider Charlie Nesbitt (RS Racing Kalex) slotted into third, briefly, before Perie responded to claim the position and it was Ben Currie (Gearlink Kawasaki) and Lee Johnston (Ashcourt Racing Yamaha) who completed the top six at the half way stage. Local ace James Hind was going great guns in seventh but Sam Munro’s session came to an early end as he crashed out at Barn.
Kennedy then went quickest with a 1’29.859s but one of his main championship rivals, Kyle Smith, was struggling down in 16th. Dynavolt Triumph team-mate Brandon Paasch was faring better though in ninth.
With ten minutes to go the order remained Kennedy, Truelove, Perie, Nesbitt, Currie and Johnston but further back, Dan Jones had moved up to seventh on the iForce Lloyd & Jones Spirit machine to be the second placed GP2 competitor.
Currie then took control with a 1’29.603 giving him a healthy quarter second advantage over Kennedy but with seven minutes to go, Truelove, fresh from his maiden class win at Donington, reclaimed the top spot with a 1’29.576. The gap was close though at just 0.027s.
However, the local rider was really getting into his groove and he increased his advantage to more than half a second next time around with a 1’28.979 giving him a 0.512s gap over new second place man Perie as Currie dropped back to third ahead of Kennedy, Nesbitt and Paasch, the American moving up to sixth.
With just two minutes of the session to go, the red flag came out though which meant no changes in the leaderboard and it was Jack Scott, Eunan McGlinchey, Jones and Johnston who completed the top ten. Smith ended up 14th.
