Donington BSB: Irving and Ray share Motostar spoils

Redline KTM’s Joe Irving, fresh from his Moto3 World Championship debut at Silverstone, looked set to pick up a Motul British Championship double at Donington Park over the weekend. However, whilst holding an eight second lead in the second race, he crashed out at the Melbourne Loop.

Irving was involved in an epic scrap for the win in the first race, carried over from Cadwell Park after the rain forced it to be cancelled. Mahindra’s Brad Ray and KTM’s Jordan Weaving joined Irving in the battle for the lead with the Holmfirth rider eventually coming out on top.

Ray took the Motostar spoils ahead of FPW Racing’s Taz Taylor and Banks Racing’s Ed Rendell. Irving claimed the Moto3 victory ahead of championship rival, South African Jordan Weaving, and Aussie Olly Simpson.

The second race saw Irving clear off in to the distance from pole position whilst Ray and Weaving entered in to a monumental battle for second and third. The pair were swapping places corner after corner, with every move increasing in aggression. It made for brilliant viewing as the pair scraped it out, coming shoulder to shoulder and fairing to fairing on numerous occasions.

Irving was eight seconds clear before high siding out of the Melbourne Loop, crashing out of what would have been the championship lead. Weaving was informed of Irving’s demise at backed off in order to increase his championship lead to 34 points with just three rounds remaining.

Ray once again won the 125 race, ahead of Taz Taylor and Ed Rendell. Banks Racing’s Rendell now sits 59 points clear in the championship, with a possible 75 points remaining.

Cresswell Racing’s Asher Durham picked up his first ever British Championship podium in only his first outing on a Moto3. Repli-Cast UK’s Charlie Nesbitt also picked up his first podium. The 13 year-old is backed my MotoGP star Scott Redding.
