Jack Kennedy dominated the Quattro British Supersport/GP2 Feature race at Donington Park on Sunday afternoon, the HEL Performance/Bournemouth Kawasaki rider coming home more than four seconds clear of the leading GP2 machine of Mason Law (Spirit Motocorsa).
Ben Currie (Gearlink Kawasaki) finished second to Kennedy in the Supersport category to keep his title hopes alive but that wasn’t the case for Lee Johnston and Bradley Perie, the latter taking both out on the final lap.
Saturday’s race winner Johnston (Ashcourt Racing Yamaha) got the drop from the lights and led the field into Redgate but Kennedy was soon in front and it was the Kawasaki man who was in the lead at the end of the opening lap. Johnston settled into second ahead of Law on the leading GP2 machine, Currie, Perie and Dan Jones.
Kennedy was really putting the hammer down at the head of the field and his lead was up to an impressive 2.5s after just two laps, Johnston continuing to hold onto second with Currie now in third after overhauling Law.
The gap stretched to four seconds next time around and it was now Law in second from Perie (Appleyard Macadam Yamaha) as Johnston slipped back to eighth with spots of rain now beginning to fall in every sector.
Kennedy didn’t seem to be put off though and maintained his four second lead on the fourth lap with Law and Perie holding station in third and fourth. Currie remained in fourth as Johnston regrouped to move back up to seventh but Sam Munro was out having crashed at McLeans.
Law reduced Kennedy’s lead slightly on lap five but only by three tenths of a second and Currie had moved up to third as Perie slipped back to fifth, Charlie Nesbitt having also found a way by. Former Moto3 GP rider Danny Webb was running in a strong sixth on the Dynavolt Triumph as the rain spots disappeared.
At half race distance, Kennedy continued to control proceedings and led Law by 3.4s with Currie close behind the GP2 man whilst Johnston was back up to fourth ahead of Perie and Webb. Nesbitt had dropped back to seventh after a moment on the approach to the Esses saw him take to the slip road on the RS Racing Kalex.
In the second half of the race, Kennedy was able to ride to his signals and although Law reduced the deficit slightly, the Dubliner had it all under control and extended it to 4.2s at the chequered flag to take his sixth win of the season which increased his championship lead to 34 points with just two races remaining.
Law took second overall and with it the maximum 25 points in the GP2 class but there was drama further back as Perie touched Johnston and the pair crashed out. That meant it was Currie and Dutchman Jamie van Sikkelerus who completed the Supersport podium, finishing third and fifth overall in the race, ahead of Triumph team-mates Webb and Brandon Paasch.
Nesbitt and Jones joined Law on the GP2 podium.
