Teccare Triumph’s Luke Mossey stormed to Motorpoint British Supersport victory in impressive style, after breaking clear off the chasing pack. Smiths Triumph’s Graeme closed Billy McConnell’s championship lead down to just one point.
The safety car was brought out almost immediately after an incident on the start-finish line. Sam Hornsey went down after Alistair Seeley cut across him and wiped out his front tyre. Taylor Mackenzie was also taken down in the crash but luckily both riders were able to walk away from the frightening crash.
As the safety car pulled in, race leader Glenn Irwin slowed the pack down to a walking pace before gunning it down the start finish. However, the tactic didn’t pay off with Mossey being able to lazily move under the inside at Redgate corner.
Mossey then moved clear, setting fastest lap after fastest lap, a pace too hot for the challengers behind to match. He took the chequered flag and his second win of the year by over three seconds but the battle for the final podium places raged on behind.
Title protagonists Gowland and McConnell battled it out for the final podium places and the pair touched on a couple of occasions at the Melbourne Loop. Gowland held the lead on the last lap and McConnell couldn’t find a reply, allowing the Northumberland rider to close the Aussie’s championship lead down to just one point.
Mar-Train Yamaha’s Alistair Seeley crashed out of the race effectively ending his title ambitions. The Northern Irishman is now 60 points behind McConnell, meaning he will need a miracle to clinch a second Supersport title.
Profile Triumph’s Luke Stapleford fought his way past yesterday’s race winner Glenn Irwin on the final lap to take fourth place after a move at the Foggy Esses.
Acumen Triumph’s Luke Jones came through in a lonely sixth place, ahead of Appleyard Macadam’s Jake Dixon and Traction Control Yamaha’s James Rispoli. Alex Olsen, winner of the EVO race and now confirmed the EVO champion, and Geordie lad Josh Corner rounded out the top ten.
