Donington BSB: Supersport pole for Kennedy

Jack Kennedy claimed pole position for this afternoon’s Quattro Group British Supersport/GP2 Championship Sprint race at Donington Park, the championship leader coming out on top in qualifying by more than half a second from title rivals Ben Currie (Gearlink Kawasaki) and Bradley Perie (Appleyard Macadam Yamaha).

It was Danny Webb who set the early pace on the Dynavolt Triumph from Harry Truelove and Korie McGreevy but Lee Johnston and Kennedy pushed them down the order in quick succession, Kennedy posting a 1’33.666 on the HEL Performance/Bournemouth Kawasaki.

That put him almost half a second clear of the rest of the field with Perie moving up to second on his second flying lap only for Johnston to retaliate with a 1’33.269 to go quickest once more on the Ashcourt Racing Yamaha.

Kennedy was showing good form though and lapped at 1’32.592 to reassert his authority, his advantage now a healthy 0.677s over Johnston. McGreevy was now in third but some 1.25s adrift.

That quickly changed with Currie slotting into second behind his championship rival, the two Kawasaki riders split by 0.495s. However, Kennedy’s next lap of 1’32.141 put him almost a second clear with his time being quicker than his best time from Friday. Mason Law, meanwhile, was leading the way in the GP2 category.

Kennedy continued to set a formidable pace and as the session reached its midway point, he posted a 1’31.825s to extend his advantage over Currie to 1.239s. Johnston had gone back into second though with a 1’32.811 whilst Charlie Nesbitt was now three tenths of a second quicker than Law in the battle for top GP2 honours.

With five minutes to go, Currie went back into second and closed the gap to Kennedy to 0.698s with Webb also making a move, the former GP rider slotting into fourth behind Johnston. It didn’t last long though with Dutchman Jamie van Sikkelerus soon getting ahead of him on the MPM Routz Racing Yamaha.

Kennedy had done enough to take the pole position and remained in the pits for the closing minutes with Currie and Perie joining him on the front row for this afternoon’s race. Currie did go quicker in the final couple of minutes but remained 0.569s adrift of the flying Kennedy.

Johnston had to settle for fourth ahead of Law who reclaimed GP2 honours with van Sikkelerus taking a season’s best in sixth. Truelove, Eunan McGlinchey, Webb and Jamie Perrin completed the top ten.
