Smiths Racing’s Jake Dixon took a dramatic Motorpoint British Supersport race win, after Team Traction Control’s Andy Reid crashed out spectacularly on the final corner, on the last lap while he was in the lead.
But with Reid out of contention Dixon was able to soar over the finishing line followed by American rider James Rispoli and championship leader, Profile Racing’s Luke Stapleford.
At first it was Reid who got the hole-shot from Stapleford and his team-mate Hornsey and Dixon. But while Hornsey was fighting for third he crashed on lap three at Lakeside, and was being assessed after a big high-side.
The safety car came out as a result of the Hornsey crash and Reid’s American team-mate, James Rispoli was able to make his way up the sharp end and placed his Yamaha right behind the Northern Irishman.
After five rotations the safety car went back in and Rispoli pulled ahead and got the better of his garage buddy at Lodge, but Reid lunged back into the front.
But Stapleford was not giving up the fight and jumped back in second and on lap eleven he set a new lap record of a 1’37.360.
A rotation later Stapleford made his move at Old Hall, only for Reid to snatch the lead at Dentons, and the fight for the win really heated up. Dixon then woke up and made a challenge that stuck at Hizzys to pass Stapleford and Reid, to lead the pack for the first time in this race, but Reid got back at Deer Leap on the penultimate lap.
But as Reid was a mere second away from his first double win he high-sided at Lodge, awarding Dixon the victory. Irwin, Wilson and Hedger completed the top six. Haribo Starmix’s Joe Collier once again took the Evo rider accolade and ended the race in ninth overall.
Title challenger Kyle Ryde broke his toe during a crash in warm up and he was declared fit to ride, but his bike was too damaged and he was unable to take part in the Supersport race today.
