Oulton BSB: Kennedy crash hands Perie Supersport win

Bradley Perie claimed victory in the Quattro Group British Supersport Championship Sprint race at Oulton Park after race leader and recently crowned champion Jack Kennedy crashed out on the final lap.

The Mar-Train Racing Yamaha rider had a lead of almost 1.5s on the final lap, only to crash out at Shell Oils Corner and Perie gratefully took the race win on his Appleyard Macadam Yamaha ahead of team-mate Harry Truelove and Lee Johnston (Ashcourt Racing Yamaha).

Luke Stapleford (Gearlink Kawasaki) got the holeshot but it was Perie in the lead at the end of the opening lap with Kennedy in third ahead of Jack Scott (Kovara Projects/RS Racing One) and Truelove but Perie soon took over the lead whilst Johnston had moved up to sixth by lap four.

It was all change on lap five though as both Stapleford and Kennedy overhauled Perie and lap six, half race distance, saw Kennedy hit the front for the first time, with 0.675s covering the leading three riders. Scott was a further half second back in fourth with Johnston and Truelove now running fifth and sixth.

Kennedy’s lead was down to 0.102s as they started lap eight and Stapleford re-took the lead at Old Hall but further back, there was a big crash for Scott on the exit of Druids, the GP2 rider flying over the handlebars but luckily escaping injury.

Back at the front and Kennedy had found a way by Stapleford once more but it was still anyone’s race with Perie sticking to the back of the front two riders. However. Kennedy stretched his lead to almost half a second at the start of lap nine and Stapleford’s strong ride ended shortly afterwards as he slowed suddenly on the run down the Avenue.

That gave Kennedy the breathing space he needed and his lead was more than a second for the first time as he went into the final three laps and Stapleford’s demise meant Johnston and Truelove were now disputing the final rostrum position with Jamie Perrin just behind them in fifth. Scott Swann, meanwhile, was having a strong ride in sixth on the second Gearlink machine.

At the head of the field, Kennedy looked to have everything sewn up and he started the final lap with a 1.4s lead but he stunned everyone by crashing out at Shell Oils and that allowed Perie to take his third win of the season.

Truelove prevailed in his battle with Johnston to take second with Perrin bringing his private Yamaha home in fourth and Swann completing his fine ride in fifth ahead of Johnston’s team-mate Damon Rees, Rhys Irwin (Astro-JJR Triumph) and Jaimie van Sikkelerus (MPM Routz Racing Yamaha).

Shane Richardson on the second Astro machine and Eugene McManus (Completely Motorbikes/Affinity Kawasaki) completed the top ten with Harvey Claridge taking the GP2 honours from Jake Archer and Cameron Fraser.
