Santander KTM Cup to be decided at Silverstone

The inaugural Santander Consumer Finance KTM British Junior Cup will be decided at Silverstone on October 3-4 where it supports the MCE British Superbike Championship event with two races. Within this conclusive meeting, the first ever RC Cup World Final will also be held which sees the leading RC Cup riders from six other countries race to find out who is the ‘best of the best’.

From the 18 races completed from the opening seven rounds of the UK RC Cup, the competition on identical specification KTM RC 390 machines has been thoroughly exciting. With nine of the 26 point-scoring riders taking podiums and winning margins that have regularly seen the top five cross the finishing line within under half a second of each other, the new Junior series has quickly established itself as a great opportunity for riders aged 13-18 to grow and show their abilities.

Following the conclusion of the British Championship, two riders will be selected to participate in the Red Bull MotoGP Red Bull Rookies selection event at Aragon on October 15-17. This will be the leading rider in the championship that meets its qualifying age along with the person that has shown the most potential this season.

Cameron Fraser leads the standings by 33 points. The 16-year old from Nottingham has tasted victory four times this season from his 14 times on the podium. “I will aim to do well in both races but I’ll maybe take fewer risks than I would normally do in order to try to win. Having the KTM RC Cup World Finals at Silverstone as well as the British Junior Cup will be incredibly exciting, especially with the prizes at stake, and being able to race against the best competitors from around the world on the same machines – it’ll be awesome.”

Chris Taylor sits second in the table, 33 points drift of Fraser with 50 remaining to be scored. The 16-year old from Coventry said:“It’s been a mega year in the RC Cup, we’ve had our fair share of bad luck but it’s not over yet and there’s still a chance of the championship. I’m also relishing the opportunity to take on the best RC Cup riders from around the world. Bring it on!”

Former series leader and the youngest rider to win a British championship race,Thomas Strudwick, makes his racing return at Silverstone following an arm injury: “I'm really looking forward to the KTM RC Cup World Final round. I know the racing will be exciting and I can't wait for the challenge! Although my title challenge ended earlier than I would've hoped, I've had a lot of time to review the racing and I feel strong going forward to Silverstone.”

For the World Final, the 17 leading riders from RC Cup series in the USA, Mexico, Netherlands, Italy, Finland and Germany will also join the ranks of the British Junior Cup to create a ‘race within a race’ for the regular runners. There are prizes for all the competitors, with the top billing being a brand new RC Cup machine along with coaching from Red Bull KTM Moto3 riders, Miguel Oliveira and Brand Binder.

While the British riders have had all season to learn from the experience of series coordinator, Steve Plater, he’ll be joined at Silverstone by former MotoGP racer and KTM development rider, Jeremy McWilliams, to help the visiting riders. Double World Superbike champion, Colin Edwards, will also be lending support to the North American riders.
