Gearlink Kawasaki’s Glenn Irwin stormed to Motorpoint British Supersport victory in emphatic style, fighting off strong competition from the Profile Triumph duo of Luke Stapleford and Luke Mossey on the final lap.
Mar-Train Yamaha’s Alistair Seeley took the holeshot from pole position but his fellow Carrickfergus resident, Irwin, took the lead from him on the second lap after Seelry ran wide. Irwin pulled a second clear of the chasing pack but once Mossey and Stapleford had made their way through to second and third, the gap began to drop.
Stapleford and Mossey as a duo posted numerous lap records, meanwhile they cut the one second advantage to nothing in the space of four laps. Former champion Seeley regrouped and chased down the leading trio, setting up the final laps as an eight wheel dice for the top step of the podium.
As the quartet entered the last lap, Irwin held the lead from Stapleford and the diminutive rider looked for a way past the Northern Irishman but there was no way through. Teammate Mossey dived under the inside of Stapleford at Village to seemingly secure second but Stapleford replied straight away, getting back under Mossey at the following hairpin of The Loop.
It remained as that over the line, Irwin capturing his fourth win of the year. Stapleford held off Mossey over the line by just over a tenth of a second to equal his best finish of the year, Mossey with his eighth podium of the year.
Despite picking up his seventh win of the year yesterday, a fourth place in today’s race surely sees Seeley’s hopes of a second Supersport title evaporate. Gowland battle through from the fourth row of the grid to salvage fifth place but teammate and title rival McConnell came home just two places back in seventh. That means, with two races remaining in a fortnight at Brands Hatch, McConnell leads by 18 points.
Floridian James Rispoli split the Smiths Triumphs in sixth place after a podium yesterday, with Luke Hedger heading the battle for a spot inside the top ten in eighth ahead of Luke Jones and Taylor Mackenzie.
