Smiths Triumph’s Graeme Gowland clinched his first Motorpoint British Supersport victory in superlative style, riding around the outside of his team-mate, Billy McConnell, at the end of the back straight on the final lap.
Adelaide rider McConnell made a poor start from pole position but he was able to take the lead at half race distance, having made with way through from fourth place. The Aussie pulled out a one and a half second advantage over the chasing duo of Gowland and Mar-Train Yamaha’s Alastair Seeley.
Gowland and Seeley began posting lap record after lap record as they pulled in McConnell at the front. The trio finally came together on the last lap, with Gowland taking the advantage early, drafting past McConnell as the trio were given the last lap flag. The Northumbrian ran wide at Agostini, however, allowing McConnell to retake the lead.
McConnell held a defensive line down the back straight but it wasn’t enough to hold off Gowland. He was able to ride around the outside of his teammate as the pair flicked in to Brundle and despite nearly losing the front-end at the final corner, Gowland hung on and took his first Supersport victory of the year. Smiths Triumph have now won the last three British Supersport races, along with a Supersport TT win.
North West 200 winner, Alastair Seeley, stole second place off of McConnell after a slip stream pushed him past the Australian at the line by just 0.036 of a second. Seeley closed McConnell’s championship advantage to eleven points after the Northern Irishman’s late pass.
Acumen Industrial Triumph’s Luke Jones got the better of a crocked Glenn Irwin and Luke Mossey to take fourth place, after a race long duel that saw the trio split by just over a tenth of a second over the line.
Tyco Suzuki’s Taylor Mackenzie beat an invigorated James Rispoli. The American taking his best result of the year onboard the Keith Flint backed Traction Control Suzuki. Profile Triumph’s Luke Stapleford and Sam Hornsey rounded out the top ten.
